メインクーンはアメリカの「メイン州のアライグマ」という意味です。遺伝学上では、猫とアライグマとの混血はあり得ませんから、外見上の特徴からその名がつけられたようです。 フランスのマリーアントワネットの愛猫であったアンゴラ猫（バンキャットとも）が革命時にアメリカへ逃がされ、その土地の野生猫と混血し、メインクーンが誕生したとも言われています。
しかし、その野性的な風貌からは想像もできないくらいにドジでマヌケで人間が好きであるというのが、私の印象です。 抱っこが好きなわけではないけれど必ず人間の傍にいたがります。だけど、決して人間の邪魔はしません。 人間と一緒に生きていく上でのルールを生まれたときから知っているような、飼いやすい猫種だと思います。 自分が猫であるとは思っていないのかもしれませんね。人間の幼稚園児が家中を駆け回っているような錯覚さえ感じるくらいです。
本当に、メインクーンは飼ってみないと分からない味わいがありますよ。

MAINECOON means "raccoon of MAINE prefecture" in America. It cannot be no half-breed with a cat and a raccoon on genetics , the name was given from the feature of their appearance. The Angora cats which were favorite cats of Marie Antoinette of France missed them to the United States at the time of a revolution, and they mixed with the wildcat of America. That's the roots of Mainecoon.
My impression of mainecoon is that although they have wild looks, they are blunder and have slow reflexes, and they like mankind so much ! They generally don't like hug, but always want to be in a man side and never disturb man's work. They are easy to keep because they know by nature the rule of living together with man. He does not think that he is a cat, I think . Sometimes I feel an illusion that kindergarteners are runnin about in my house.
Indeed, mainecoon have their own charm which you can't understand unless you keep mainecoon.
Well, There are standard of mainecoon as well as other cats. Breeders who come to catshow are pursuing their own ideal image of mainecoon which meet the standard.
